What is an Expedition Leader?
Leaders are responsible for ensuring that students and teachers have the best possible experience. Leaders are responsible for participant safety, happiness and learning. Leaders are also responsible for delivering the World Challenge ethos of leadership and ecological and cultural respect and responsibility.World Challenge Leaders are expected to lead from behind so that Challengers have opportunities to make mistakes and to take charge of situations themselves. Nonetheless, Leaders should expect to step in and assist with team dynamics, planning, budgeting, communication, etc when necessary.
Ops & Safety
Leaders aren’t responsible for designing itineraries, writing risk assessments, or setting up community service projects. World Challenge has a dedicated team of Planning Managers working on these tasks for each destination. However Leaders are responsible for:
- Trouble shooting logistical changes and performing dynamic risk assessments on the ground
- Following itineraries, general risk assessments, and company protocol about safety and health
- Managing the safety and health of all participants
- Working with World Challenge resources (on call Ops Center and doctors) when necessary to coordinate medical or logistical assistance for the team.
- Maintaining and using all team gear, med kits, and satellite technology appropriately
Leaders help look out for the psychological well being of the team. For many Challengers and teachers this is the first time they have attempted any kind of extended trek and it is often the first time they have left the United States or spent so long away from home. Leaders should provide team members with the support and space to allow participants to:
- Meet and overcome personal challenges
- Develop communication and leadership skills
- Immerse themselves in a foreign environment
- Have fun!
- Challenge: As expeditions unfold, unfamiliar challenges arise. Explore new environments and become acquainted with local cultures.
- Participation: Students work as a team. Each student rotates through various leadership roles to help the whole group overcome all expedition challenges.
- Environment: Global citizenship and ecological literacy are integral to every expedition. Students learn about new environments by engaging with new communities.
