Leader requirements
Every World Challenge Expedition is lead by a highly trained and experienced Leader. Leaders are carefully selected based on their unique experiences and qualifications.The following list indicates some of the character attributes and qualifications that we look for when considering potential Leaders:
Required Qualifications:
- Significant group leadership experience with students aged 14 to 18
- Experience as a wilderness guide or trip leader (40+ days required)
- Demonstrated ability to identify and mitigate risk in outdoor, urban, and group settings
- Extensive developing world travel experience (personal travel is okay)
- Current WFA & CPR certification. WFR & CPR is preferred
- Criminal background check (not needed in order to apply)
- Valid Passport (not needed in order to apply)
- Demonstrated ability to excite and engage high school students
- Demonstrated ability to motivate a group and facilitate team work and problem solving
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex situations under pressure
- Demonstrated ability to safeguard a group in a variety of environments (urban, rural, mountain, etc)
- Comfort with a variety of outdoor gear and equipment
- High altitude experience is preferred and necessary for some (but not all) expeditions
- Understanding of wilderness health risks and prevention (diet, dehydration, heat stroke, hypothermia, etc)
- Understanding of travel health & safety risks and knowledge of prevention / treatment techniques
- Demonstrated ability to adapt to and follow specific protocol around medical issues and expedition reporting
