Potential Leader Training & Assessment Course

All potential Expedition Leaders must attend a Potential Leader Training and Assessment Course (PLC).

This is generally a 5 day training and assessment event. The first 2 days are classroom based. The last 3 days are a practical assessment where Potential Leaders work with a group of high school students in the field.

The course is designed to develop both technical skills and practical experience and will cover all aspects of leading a World Challenge Expedition including:
  • Introduction to World Challenge (history & ethos)
  • Expedition Overview
  • The role of a World Challenge Leader
  • Group Dynamics & Team Building
  • Expedition Safety
  • Risk Management
  • In-Country support
  • Operations Room and Safety & Backup System
  • Expedition Equipment
Potential Leaders will be assessed on the following:
  • Ability to ensure team safety and make sound decisions in the field
  • Ability to deliver the World Challenge ethos
  • Ability to teach and demonstrate standard expedition / camping skills
  • An ability to engage with a team of students and teachers and create “teaching moments” while on the trail.
  • Knowledge of basic wilderness medicine
Potential Leaders will be assessed by World Challenge instructors and staff, other Potential Leaders (peer assessment), and by a group of students who are currently signed up for an Expedition.

Potential Leader Courses generally take place in September and October (sometimes also in Feb or March). Transportation to the training location is at your own expense. Room and board at the Training Course are provided by World Challenge.

Details for upcoming Potential Leader Courses are displayed in the “events” section of our Facebook page. Join the page to get notified when future courses are scheduled.
