Leader Training Program

We know that some great leaders may not come to us with all the required skills in-hand. We believe in investing in the development of our Leaders to ensure the maximum benefit for both our clients and our staff.

If you would like to work for World Challenge and have some, but not all of the relevant background requirements, we encourage you to still apply.

Depending on your application we may be able to invite you to attend an upcoming Potential Leaders Course (which is the best way to learn more about becoming a World Challenge Leader). And either way we’ll be happy to give you some tips on how to improve your application for a future season.

If you attend a Potential Leaders Course and are not selected to lead your own expedition, we may still offer you the opportunity to train with World Challenge as an Assistant Leader.

Being an Assistant Leader will allow you to:

  • Gain practical experience and learn leadership skills tailored to the World Challenge program.
  • Participate in leader and destination training (typically a weekend conference called the “Expedition Preparation Conference” that happens in Boston every spring).
    • Event room and board are included in the conference. Travel costs are reimbursed up to $250 per training event.
  • Travel overseas with a team and assist the team’s Leader in all aspects of the Expedition process.
    • All international travel costs are covered by World Challenge (flight, travel visa, food, and accommodation)
    • Comprehensive insurance coverage for your time abroad is also covered.
After being an Assistant Expedition Leader, based on the recommendation of your supervising Leader, you should be eligible to lead your own team. If qualified, we will make every effort to offer you a contract within 1 year.

To be considered as an Assistant Leader, you should:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Minimum Age: 23+ years
  • Wilderness First Responder
  • 40+ days experience camping and hiking (personal experience is okay)
  • Group leadership experience with students aged 14 to18
