World Challenge and the International Baccalaureate

World Challenge aims to bring to schools programs that complement and enhance their existing curricula, and provide exciting opportunities for students and staff. The program delivered by World Challenge aligns very well with the ethos of the International Baccalaureate, and further offers students a springboard for fulfilling elements of the IB diploma the CAS requirements and the Extended Essay.

The International Baccalaureate ethos

Learning how to learn
We take students out of the classroom and teach them the value of experiential learning in the outdoors, learning for themselves and as a team, making mistakes and learning from their experiences.

Asking challenging questions

We encourage students to think for themselves, and to challenge themselves and their peers to do things differently.

Communicating with people from other cultures
What makes a World Challenge expedition different from a package tour is that students are able to interact and communicate with people from different cultures every day.

Developing a strong sense of identity

We give students the freedom and guidance to assume the roles needed on an expedition (leader, accountant, cook, transport and environmental officer etc). In assuming these roles they learn more about their own strengths and weaknesses within teams.

Creative:
  • Planning and researching the itinerary
  • Creative fundraising
  • Pre-expedition presentation for parents on the achievements and plans of the team
  • Creative problem solving of every day issues on expedition
  • Community project (construction, painting, teaching, etc)
  • Creative skills including travel photography and journal writing
  • Post expedition presentation (school assembly/ parents evening)
Action:
  • Fitness training program encourages ongoing regular activities
  • Learning of new physical skills during training events
  • Trekking (two to 15 days)
  • Other adventurous activities (white water rafting, kayaking, horse riding)
  • Camping
  • Potential for the team to help out with the fitness training for the next year’s team
Service:
  • Potential for pre-expedition linking of school team with host community project
  • Organizing activities within the school/ community to aid fundraising
  • A worthwhile community project from four to ten days
  • Potential for ongoing links with international community project site
Throughout the program we encourage students to research and think widely about their expedition. This could provide a springboard for an Extended Essay.

For example:
  • ‘A history of the Mayan People’ – following an expedition to Mexico or Belize
  • ‘The impact of poaching on sea turtle numbers’ – following an expedition to Thailand involving a turtle conservation project
  • ‘Community based tourism in the Himalayas’ – following an expedition to India
  • ‘Education and AIDS in East Africa’ – following an expedition to Malawi involving a project in a local school
