The highest and most isolated of the South American countries, landlocked Bolivia is home to the highest capital city in the world, La Paz. It is made up of Andean snow capped mountains, salt flats, Amazonian rainforest, dry highlands and humid lowlands which make for a fantastically diverse mix of terrains.
Teams will use the beautiful colonial city of La Paz as a base for their treks and begin with the three day Taquesi trail which takes you along the Andean foothills. The main trek on this expedition is the Cordillera Traverse, which will challenge students by taking them up to 5,000m in the Andes. From this height students will experience breathtaking vistas of pristine lakes and glaciers.
The service aspect in Bolivia involves working with street kids, who are some of the most vulnerable and marginalized members of Bolivian society. World Challenge students will work with local organizations to provide assistance and support for these children by helping with construction projects, sporting events and cultural performances.
For recreational time, teams will have the opportunity to visit the Salt Flats of Bolivia. Bolivia contains the largest salt lake in the world, and while there students will get to stay in a hotel made entirely of salt! They will also visit the Bolivian desert with its famous tree stone, flamingoes and volcanoes. Afterwards, students travel to Rurrenabaque for some time in the jungle with wildlife like caimans, monkeys, turtles and rare pink Amazonian dolphins. As the expedition draws to a close, there is one more site of note to visit before heading home, Lake Titicaca; a destination which has long been considered an extremely sacred place by local indigenous people.
