Trekking China's Middle Kingdom
|
|
Known as the ‘Middle Kingdom’, China is the third largest country in the world and one of Asia’s most unusual and compelling destinations. Rich cultural heritage, spectacular scenery and increased accessibility have made China an incredibly popular destination in recent years, though World Challenge teams experience it like few others.
Treks include a hike to one of the five great mountains of Taosim, Hua Shan in the Shaanxi Province. This two day trek heads towards a large granite outcrop which rises dramatically out of the surrounding plains. For a five day trek, students will take on the Mt. Jola loop in the Tagong Grasslands through one of China’s most beautiful mountain landscapes. The team will explore the region’s meadows, lakes, hot springs, and temples with the stunning view of the snow capped mountains of Mt. Jola as the trek’s backdrop.
Service opportunities include work within a local children’s orphanage where you will be assisting with basic renovation and some teaching. The specific project tasks will depend on the current needs of the village, but will all immerse students in the culture of rural China.
On your recreational day, teams won’t want to miss the opportunity to visit the legendary site of the Great Wall of China, see the Terracotta Warriors and explore the Forbidden City in Beijing. Students also have the opportunity to stop by the Giant Panda Breeding Research Base outside of Chengdu, which helps protect pandas from the threat of extinction.
