Highlights: Working in an orphanage, trekking in a destination described as a “trekkers paradise”, lemur sightings and cultural immersion

The island of Madagascar has been described as a ‘living museum’ or ‘lost Eden,’ and with over 70 species of lemurs, the largest and smallest chameleons in the world, and its title as the only remaining home of the largest bird that ever lived, the names fit. The culture is a rich and fascinating blend of South East Asian and East African influences, and the lively and colorful Malagasy people form as interesting a back drop as the spectacular geography and wildlife.

Teams will be trekking in Ranomafana National Park where there are many short trails through the rainforest. This landscape is an excellent venue to see many species of lemur; it is the only place in the world to see the rare golden bamboo lemur. In the following week, teams will be trekking through Andasibe Mantadia National Park which is the home of Madagascar’s largest lemur.
Service work in Madagascar gives the teams an exciting opportunity to work in the AkanyAvoko orphanage alongside established local charities supporting educational initiatives. Students often find this part of the expedition the most rewarding, as they connect deeply with people they wouldn’t even have the chance to meet under normal everyday circumstances.
During their recreational time, students will be sleeping on the decks of a boat travelling down the Tsiribihina River heading towards the Kirindy Forest Reserve. While in the reserve, they will be exploring the many trails within the dry forest which contains nocturnal lemurs and foosa. From there, teams spend some well deserved beach time in a local seaside village.
