Trekking in Morocco
There is a wide variety of trekking areas in offer in Morocco. Please note that some of the trekking regions will only be available at certain times of the year.
- Mt. Toubkal (The High Atlas Mountains) – Mt. Toubkal is the highest mountain in North Africa, reaching 4167m. The team’s objective will be to summit this mountain. This trek is available for the majority of the year.
- Amezmiz – Teams will follow a low level circular route around the village of Amezmiz. You will be able to get a more remote trekking experience and better opportunities for cultural interaction than on the Mt. Toubkal trek. This trek is available for the majority of the year.
- The Todra Gorge Region – when trekking in this region you will have the chance to visit some traditional Berber villages. This trek is available for the majority of the year.
- Erg Chebbi – Teams can travel to the desert at Erg Chebbi as part of a 10-day expedition combined with the Todra Gorge trek. Accompanied by camels, teams will trek out onto the sand dunes in the evening, camp overnight in a Berber tent or under the desert sky and awake to the beautiful sunrise.
- The Dades Gorge Region – Teams will travel over the Atlas Mountains passing through some local Berber villages and trek in the Dades Valley. This trek is available all year round.
- Jebel Sahro – Teams will trek through the desert and therefore this trek is not available during the summer months due to the heat and lack of water. Outside of the summer months, this trek provides the opportunity to see breathtaking scenery and a contrasting option to the mountain treks.
- The M’Goun Massif – This trek is ideal for those that wish to venture further off the typical tourist trail. This option offers a tougher, more challenging and more remote trekking experience than Mt. Toubkal.
- Jebel Siroua – Teams will have the opportunity to summit Jebel Siroua as well as trek through Berber villages, lush palmeries, stunning rocky desert valleys and gorges. Due to snow and ice, the summit may not be possible in the winter months.
- High Atlas Trek – This trek is ideal for teams that want to experience the High Atlas Mountains without having to summit Mt. Toubkal. Teams will witness stunning views of the Atlas Mountain range on the trek as they cross the Tizi N’Tacheddirt Pass, trek through many local villages and have the opportunity to summit a local peak.
World Challenge currently has an excellent range of projects in Morocco, all of which provide a brilliant opportunity to work within the local communities and become immersed in the Moroccan culture. Previous projects have been based in small primary schools in rural villages where teams have participated in various activities such as painting, construction and teaching English.
Rest and Relaxation
All itineraries incorporate some time on the last day of the expedition to explore the fascinating city of Marrakech. Here, you should have time for some last minute haggling in the various Souks and to experience Djemaa El Fna Square with its dramatic mix of musicians, healers, storytellers & vendors.
