Expedition build-up day

Build-Up Day is for extended expeditions only. This is takes place the day and night before the team departs and is typically at the school. It is the responsibility of the teacher and the team to get approval to use the school or to find an alternate location where the team can all be together overnight.

Build-Up Day will begin with a brief presentation to parents by a World Challenge representative to stage the final family goodbye’s and work through a last round of Q&As. Teams then spend the next 18 to 24 hours working with their Expedition Leader to begin to digest what lies ahead. Their Expedition Leader will also use this time to triple check that each traveller has the correct gear and travel documents, and that everything is in order for departure.

During Build-Up Day, teams complete the follow activities...

  • Distribute the team gear
  • Review each students personal gear – make sure they have everything needed for expedition
  • Review medical details in one-on-one meetings
  • Establish team rules the students want to follow on expedition
  • Review World Challenge safety protocol
  • Complete various team building exercises
World Challenge maintains comprehensive liability coverage for all organized domestic and international events. All participating districts, administrators, and school staff are included in this liability insurance generally relating to the program and specifically relating to Build-Up Day.

Unless otherwise noted, teams are responsible for organizing their own transport to the airport from Build-Up Day. Teams usually arrange a carpool, with three or four parents volunteering to drive students to the airport. Alternatively, schools sometimes volunteer a district van or bus to transport teams.
