Training expedition

The highlight of the pre-expedition program will be the training that both teachers and students receive from World Challenge. For both our standard expeditions and extended expeditions training is required, but is also a lot of fun. Training costs are included in the expedition fees. Travel to the training weekend is not included.

Standard Expedition Training Workshop

Students and their teacher will meet with an Expedition Leader for approximately 5 hours at the school. Parents are invited to come and participate at the end of the workshop. Training dates will be scheduled well in advance with World Challenge and the teacher.

Extended Expedition Training Weekend

Students and their teacher will travel to the Berkshires and spend the weekend on the Appalachian Trail learning the fundamentals of expedition travel while camping for the weekend. Training weekends begin Friday afternoon and end Sunday by noon.

Past training curriculum for both the Training Workshop and Training Weekend has included...

  • How to pack a backpack, set up tents, and care for gear
  • Leave-no-Trace camping and personal hygiene
  • How to stay healthy while hiking, cooking, and travelling abroad
  • How to safely cross a river and interpret risk assessments
  • What to do if you or someone on your team gets lost or injured while on a trek or in the city
  • How to use the Emergency Satellite technology that all teams carry while on expedition
  • How to facilitate team meetings & reflections and deal with group conflict
